Category: MVP Baseball 2005

I’ll be covering everything that happened since my last post in this one as well as today’s stuff.

LAD

ADD: Nook Logan

Signed to a minor league deal.  Logan’s only asset is his speed, and with the Dodgers already having guys who can run in the outfield (Pierre, Kemp) it figures for Logan to have a hard time making the club.

SEA

ADD: Anderson Garcia

A waiver claim from the Phillies. He has a nice fastball but nothing else.  He will likely pitch in AA or AAA.

PHI

ADD: Kris Benson

Benson is coming off arm surgery, and might not be ready for Opening Day.  He can choose to be released if he is not on the active roster by 3/25.  If he sticks around, he could be the team’s 5th starter.

CHC

ADD: Alex Cintron

Signed to a minor league deal. He could end up making the Cubs in the case of an injury or two as a utility man.

WAS

ADD: Bret Boone

He’s back, and older than ever.  He last played with the Twins in 2005, and retired in Spring Training of 06 with the Mets.  He literally has no shot of making the team, and will probably be released shortly.

NYM

Signed to a minor league deal, Brady will try to crack the Mets as a backup outfielder. Given his weak arm strength, he’ll only be an option in center and left if he makes the team, which is somewhat of a longshot.

Mench spent last year with the Brewers in a platoon role with Geoff Jenkins. He is very effective against LHP, and if he makes the Rangers (signed to a minor league deal), that would probably be his role again.

LAD

ADD: Mark Sweeney

Resigned by the Dodgers, Sweeney will back up James Loney and be the team’s top pinch hitter.

NYM

ADD: Olmedo Saenz

Sanez has spent the past couple years with the Dodgers, mainly in a pinch hitting role. If he makes the Mets, which will be tough to do with all their bench depth, he will serve the same role.

MIN

ADD: Livan Hernandez

Livan was signed to a one year, $5 million deal. He will certainly be in the team’s rotation, and will eat up his normal 200 innings.

SEA

Norton was signed to a minor league contract. He will be a useful bat off the bench if he makes the team.

PHI

Signed to a minor league deal. Benson sat out all of 07 with arm surgery. He could make the team as the fifth starter if healthy, but the Phillies shouldn’t be expecting much from him all season.

PIT

ADD: Doug Mientkiewicz

I suppose the Pirates could opt to carry him as Adam LaRoche’s backup or for late inning defense at 1b, but he doesn’t figure to see many ABs.

BAL

ADD: Steve Trachsel, Andy Mitchell

The Human Rain Delay returns to the O’s on a minor league deal. He was traded late last season to the Cubs, so essentially, the O’s got a decent prospect in 3b Scott Moore for free. He could make the team, or be insurance for when an injury occurs to the O’s starting rotation.

Mitchell spent 2007 in AAA with the O’s.  He was resigned to a minor league contract, where he will spend all of 08.

OAK

ADD: Mike Sweeney

Sweeney had spent his entire career with the Royals. He will give Dan Johnson or Daric Barton a run at the starting 1b job, or perhaps be the starting DH for the A’s. In any case, he will provide leadership for the extremely young A’s, and if healthy, will put up some decent numbers.

NYM

ADD: Tony Armas

Armas split time in the rotation and bullpen last season for Pittsburgh, stinking it up as usual in both places. He will have a tough time cracking the Mets bullpen.

CIN

ADD: Bryan Bass

Bass was previously in the O’s organization.  He spent 07 in AA where he posted a .679 OPS.  He will likely play in Chattanooga with the Reds.

CLE

ADD: Wil Cordero

The 36-year-old will spend the year in AAA, if he’s not cut in Spring Training before that.

COL

ADD: Alec Zumwalt

He spent last season in AAA Sacramento and Nashville.  He will be depth at AAA Colorado Springs.

FLA

DELETE: James Brauer

Voluntarily retired.  He spent last season doodling around in Florida’s system.

HOU

ADD: Alberto Castillo, Jesse Garcia

Garcia was resigned to a minor league deal.  He’ll spend 08 in AAA.  Castillo could see some action with the Astros if there’s catching injuries.  He spent last season with Baltimore.

KC

ADD: Jeff Fulchino

Jeff put up a 5.83 ERA in 16 starts in 07 with AAA Albuquerque.  He will be AAA depth.

SEA

ADD: Rich Dorman

Dorman spent last season in the Marlins org.  He will play at AAA with the Tacoma Rainiers.

CIN

ADD: Craig Wilson

A minor league deal.  He is still a capable platoon player, and perhaps the Reds will give him the opportunity to bat against LHP.  He does not figure to see a whole lot of playing time if he makes the Reds unless an injury happens.

SD

ADD: Tony Clark

The deal is around $900,000.  He will be the team’s top pinch hitter, and will start in place of Adrian Gonzalez every once in a while.
